“Don’t try to fool me with some made–up story. This isn’t something you can just joke about.”
“Why would I make it up? Everyone at the office was talking about it today. You noticed it, didn’t you?”
Honestly, I felt both angry and amused.
No wonder people were looking at me weirdly. It turned out they thought I was about to fall, and they were just waiting to kick me while I was down.
“Heh, you guys really are so snobbish.” I shook my head, and just then, the office door swung open.
Wendy stepped out, looking disheveled–her collar was stretched like someone had yanked it, her sleeves were rolled up roughly, and her hair was a mess.
I froze, frowning.
Was Wendy really in there?
“What are you doing here?” I asked, surprised the secretary had actually been telling the truth.
“Oh, Ms. Sinclair’s here too. What a coincidence,” Wendy said, her tone clearly implying more than her words.
Just then, Eleanor stepped out of the office as well.
“What are you doing here? I heard everything you two just said. You have no manners, arguing in a place like this.” Eleanor glanced at me dismissively.
“My apologies, Mrs. Holbrook. It was my fault, the secretary said to Eleanor, then looked at me with disdain.
“I just came to get the contract. She’s the one who stopped me.” I held back my frustration, glancing at the people in front of me.
Still, I was puzzled. Things were already becoming chaotic outside, so why had Caden not come out yet?
“Do you have any sense? Caden already said not to invest in film. Are you trying to go against him on purpose?” Eleanor glared at me.
I laughed bitterly, momentarily at a loss for words.
“Why can’t you be more like Wendy? She’s graceful, kind, and most importantly, she’s filial and knows to come spend time with me. And you? Who knows what you’re busy with every day?” After scolding me, Eleanor turned to Wendy with concern. “You must be tired, aren’t you? Want to take a break?”
“No need. I’m fine. I just didn’t want Ms. Sinclair to feel upset,” Wendy said, still slightly out of breath, which made the whole scene even harder for me to accept.
“What’s the big deal? As long as you’re happy, who cares what others think!”
I shook my head in disbelief. Never in a million years did I expect a mother–in–law to turn a blind eye to another woman messing around with her son in the office.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going.” I had no energy left to deal with them and was ready to leave. But

“Where do you think you’re going during work hours?” she snapped. Just then, Wendy suddenly held her head and swayed like she was about to faint.
“Mrs. Holbrook, I’m feeling a little dizzy.” Wendy swayed. Suddenly, she reached out–who knows what she grabbed onto–but her hand ended up on my waist.
I had my back to her, and the moment she touched me, I lost my balance. I stumbled and fell to the floor.
Frowning, I looked up at Wendy–only to see her standing there smug and proud. I’d had enough.
I got up and grabbed her hand.
“What are you doing? Let go!” Wendy struggled to pull away.
Seeing that I was about to drag her into the office, Wendy became panicked. She quickly turned to Eleanor for help.
“Mrs. Holbrook, please, look at her!”
Eleanor rushed over and blocked my path. “What do you think you’re doing?”
“To catch someone cheating, of course,” I said coldly, then stepped past her.
Just as I reached the office door, Eleanor shrieked, “Stop right there! My son is working. You can’t barge in and disturb him like this!”
I ignored her and kept dragging Wendy toward the office, but Wendy suddenly yanked me back with surprising force.
Eleanor immediately called over the secretary to help.
The two of them worked together to pull me away. We were nearly at the elevator by the time I tried to yank my hand back, but they had such a tight grip I couldn’t break free.
“Where are you taking me? Let me go!”
Wendy pressed the elevator button, her expression fierce. “Stop making trouble. Just go back to where you belong.”
The elevator doors were about to open. Wendy and the secretary looked ready to shove me in by force. I braced myself, ready to release my Alpha power to push them back, but right then, the elevator chimed with a “ding.”
The elevator doors opened, and I felt a sudden force at my waist. I tried to stay where I was, but then I felt Wendy take her hand off my waist.
Confused, I turned around and met Caden’s clear, almond–shaped eyes.
