Chapter 294

The others gathered around, their faces full of curiosity. One of them asked, “What happened?”
The assistant whispered, “I was just about to deliver something to Mr. Soto when she came storming out of his office, looking furious. Mr. Soto followed right behind her, actually smiling!”
“So what?” another colleague asked blankly. “Isn’t that how Mr. Soto always is?”
“Oh, come on!” the assistant cut in. “You all know what Mr. Soto is usually like, a total wolf in sheep’s clothing. But just now, he was grinning from ear to ear, honestly, like a sunflower in full bloom! It freaked me out so much I thought all this overtime was making me hallucinate!”
The assistant grumbled while making a face that was a near–perfect imitation of Urban’s earlier expression. “Just like this!” she said, mimicking him.
The crowd gasped in unison. “Holy shit! You must be seeing things! That can’t be right, go double- check and report back!”
The assistant shot her an annoyed look. “Don’t believe me? Ask Dawn. She just went in to deliver some documents and has the inside scoop.”
All eyes turned to Dawn, who shrugged and said, “Honestly, you’d better focus on sorting the files. Bradley is in serious trouble. Mr. Soto just told me to dig up everything he’s ever handled.”
To track down all the projects Bradley was involved in, they needed to find every document with his signature. While most records were now digital, there were still years‘ worth of pre–digitalization paperwork they had to dig through.
Finding Bradley’s files among hundreds of files in the archive was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
The crowd froze as if struck by lightning. In an instant, all their excitement over the boss’s juicy gossip vanished. Everyone quickly scattered, abandoning the drama and rushing back to work.
Meanwhile, Maxine had already met up with Lisa and the others, but Vivian, who had left about half an hour earlier, was still nowhere to be seen.
Remembering Hamlin and the threats Bradley had thrown at them earlier today, Maxine started to worry, She quickly called Vivian, just to make sure she was okay.
Thankfully, Vivian picked up after just a couple of rings. She answered, “Hey, Max? What’s up?”
Lisa leaned in and said loudly into the phone, “Didn’t you just say you were coming over? What’s

Vivian seemed to exchange a few more words on the phone, then turned to them and said, “I just ran into an old friend, so I won’t be joining you today. Go ahead and have fun without me.”
Before Lisa could even get a word in, she hung up.
Maxine stared at her phone, feeling uneasy. She thought, ‘What if she’s being forced into something? What if something happens to her because we just ignore it?’
Lisa took a bite of her food and waved it off casually. “No worries. Trust me, you’ve probably never seen my mom train in the ring. She’s got better moves than me.”
Lisa pointed at Jess beside her and grinned. “Let me put it this way. I can lift Jessica with one hand, but my mom? She can not only do that, she can even spin her around a few times with just one hand!”
This genuinely shocked Maxine. After all, Lisa was years older than her, yet still maintained such incredible physical condition, it was practically unheard of.
Jessica bounced up excitedly. “Really? Then I want to play with Vivian next time!”
Maxine stared at her phone, still unable to shake off her worry. ‘If anything happened to Vivian
because of me, I’d never forgive myself,’ she thought.
