Chapter 242
He smiled awkwardly and explained, “Charles was supposed to bring this over, but since I had a meeting at the company today and it was on my way, 1 asked the housekeeper to make some soup and brought it myself.”
Maxine glanced at the keys in his hand, thinking to herself, ‘That’s nothing but an excuse‘
“Thanks,” Maxine said.
Seeing she didn’t refuse, Sebastian breathed a sigh of relief. “Well then, I should get going, got some business to attend to,” he said.
After Sebastian closed the door and left, Maxine stood still for a moment. In the end, she sat down at the table and finished the soup.
For the next several days, Sebastian would often drop by with custom–made nutritious meals, hardly ever the same twice. Whether her ankle was healing was beside the point. Maxine was practically gaining weight from all this nourishing food.
Maxine sat on the sofa, closed her laptop, and wearily rubbed her temples. Just as she did, Sebastian opened the door and walked in.
After spending the past few days together, Maxine and Sebastian had grown much closer. Smiling, Sebastian said, “Today’s meal is a bowl of soup, be sure to finish it all.”
The CEO of the Noxen Group had practically become her personal delivery guy, even fussing over these trivial details. Maxine watched as Sebastian carefully arranged the dishes and cutlery on the table.
‘If Cleo snapped a few photos of this and sold them, she’d make a fortune,‘ Maxine thought.
Just as Sebastian opened the door to leave after putting things away, Maxine suddenly called out from behind, her voice hesitant. “Are you free tonight?”
He froze for a second, then spun around and blurted out, “Absolutely!”
Maxine cleared her throat, her expression slightly awkward. “Let’s… go out for dinner tonight.”
Sebastian smiled and walked back over to her. Instinctively, he reached out as if to tousle her hair, but quickly restrained himself and lowered his hand. “Alright then, I’ll come pick you up,” he said with a gentle smile.
Maxine watched Sebastian, a grown man still acting like a lovestruck teenager, and let out a helpless sigh. ‘Honestly, he’s such a kid sometimes,‘ she thought to herself. Leaning on her crutch, she walked to the window, gently lifted the curtain, and watched as his car disappeared down the street.
Maxine thought to herself with a quiet sigh, ‘Let’s give him a chance, and give myself one too.‘
Sebastian got into his car, glanced up at the slightly parted curtain, where Maxine had been watching, and, with a faint smile, pulled out his phone to call
Charles.
He said, “Mr. Mason, is the meeting still on for tonight? The PR department is ready to present their report.”
Sebastian said, “Cancel tonight’s meeting. Move it to tomorrow morning.”
Charles was taken aback and blurted out, “Is this about Ms. Hudson?”
Instead of answering, Sebastian said curtly, “Just do as I say. Clear my evening schedule.”
That evening, Maxine hobbled out the door, leaning on her crutch. The moment Sebastian saw her, he hurried over to steady her. “You could’ve just waited for me inside,” he said gently.
Maxine gritted her teeth. ‘I asked Sebastian out purely on impulse, totally forgetting about my mobility issues. Should’ve just waited until I was further along,’ she thought.
Sebastian didn’t seem to mind at all. He fetched a wheelchair from the room, gently assisted Maxine into it, and then thoughtfully draped a blanket ov

her lap
They drove to a nearby shopping mall, where a massive new landmark had just opened. Sebastian pushed her wheelchair around the plaza, she the sights, before taking her into a restaurant.
“Thanks for today,” Maxine said softly.
After all, he’d been pushing her around in the wheelchair all this time.
Sebastian smiled and poured her a glass of water. “It’s nothing. Taking care of you is the least I can do.”
‘This is my way of making up for the past,‘ he thought.
Maxine had only taken a few bites before suddenly remembering her son. She looked up and asked Sebastian, “Where’s Brian? He should be out of school by now.”
