I froze. Right in front of me, Mr. Richard told my husband to keep Jessica company.
“I’m not going, Grandpa. I want to stay with Rosic,” Caden said bluntly, clearly not stupid.
Mr. Richard’s face darkened. “I told you to go, so go. Why so much nonsense?”
I caught a smug look on Jessica’s face and suddenly understood what Caden had complained about before- Grandpa still owed a few favors to some Alphas from the Stars Pack. He never paid them back, which was why he kept giving Jessica face. He even brought her into Caden’s company.
It looks like those favors weren’t small. Mr. Richard didn’t even care about saving face for me or Caden. He was set on backing Jessica.
“I’m not going.” Caden refused again and placed a piece of meat on my plate. “You like this. Eat more.”
I blinked, touched by how firmly he stood by me..
This was the man I chose–reliable, clear–headed in tough moments.
Jessica looked embarrassed. But since it was the Eclipse Pack’s banquet, she couldn’t say much, no matter how upset she was. She continued to eat, even though her hands were visibly shaking.
“So now what? This is my birthday banquet, and you won’t even listen to me?” Mr. Richard was furious after being rejected by his own grandson. His Alpha aura flared as he glared at Caden.
“I’m just doing what’s right,” Caden said coldly, not backing down. “I have a fiancée. And you want me to entertain a single woman? Do you think that’s appropriate?”
Mr. Richard opened his mouth, brows furrowed. “She’s your friend!”
Still, Caden didn’t budge. The two locked eyes, both unleashing their full presence. People nearby were so scared, some even collapsed onto the floor.
I stood up and gently took each of their arms. “Mr. Richard, it’s your birthday today. Don’t argue with younger generation. For your sake–and mine as your granddaughter–in–law–please calm down.”
Then I turned to Caden. “Come on, eat. The food’s getting cold.”
That smoothed things over a little. Caden reined in his temper. Mr. Richard didn’t say anything else, but his face stayed dark. He didn’t bring up Jessica again, though.
The banquet ended in a cold, awkward silence.
The next day.
I went to visit Shay early in the morning. A master like him rarely showed up–I had to make the most of it.
As I adjusted my clothes at the door, I rang the bell.
After a long wait, the door opened. I was just about to raise my hand to greet him when I realized the figure in front of me didn’t quite match Shay.
Looking closer, it wasn’t Shay–it was Andrew.

I was a little surprised. “H–hello, Mr. Lindell.”

I greeted him, and he seemed a bit surprised too. Then he gave a slight nod. “Come in. You’re here to see Shay, right?”
I nodded, not expecting Andrew to be here too.
“I haven’t visited Mr. Bailey in a while. I was worried he’d think I was being rude, so I came by to check in.” I smiled, explaining my reason.
“Good girl. Come on in.” Andrew nodded again. His eyes were still full of approval.
He led me inside. Shay was seated in the center of the living room, brewing tea. “Who is it?” he asked without looking up.
“It’s me, Mr. Bailey,” I replied, then placed a crystal piece I’d brought on the table. “I brought this for you. Feel free to look it over for a couple of days.”
“Very thoughtful,” Shay said with a smile, standing up and walking over to me.
“Look at this girl,” he said, raising an eyebrow and beaming with pride. “Not bad, right?” He was clearly showing me off to Andrew.
“Not bad at all,” Andrew echoed, then turned to me with eager eyes. “Girl, with those skills of yours, have you never thought about taking a master?”
Here we go again. Didn’t I already turn him down yesterday?
Why was this master so persistent?
“Uhm… not for now,” I declined again. I had too much on my plate. If I took on a master now, I’d have even less time later.
But Andrew didn’t give up. “With your talent, it’d be a shame not to push further.”
Shay simply smiled at me, saying nothing. I knew he was letting me decide for myself.
“Oh no, I’m just an ordinary person,” I quickly deflected.
“How could that be?” Andrew pressed. “Still not considering it? Trust me–you’ve got great potential.”
“Uhm … ” I was nearly in tears from the pressure. I looked helplessly toward Shay, silently begging for help.
