Chapter 147
I thought Kaiden would take us to the mansion.
But he didn’t.
Instead, the road bent away from the city lights, winding through fields and silence, until the car isolated, surrounded by wild grass and the soundless hum of night.

Kaiden didn’t speak a word as we went inside. However, something about the air here felt wrong. Too still. Too heavy. Too dangerous.
We kept walking and walking until he stopped infront of a room.
And what I saw after that, blew my mind in a bad way.
In that room, there was Barbara.
I didn’t go inside the room because Dr. Pilboi was treating her, but I took a peek through the window.
Barbara was slumped on a chair–unconscious, tied, and bruised.
Her face was swollen and covered in blood, almost unrecognizable. Her once–long hair had been chopped unevenly, as if someone had taken out their rage on it.
For a moment, I thought she was dead.
I stumbled back, my hand flying to my mouth in shock.
What had happened to her?
What the hell did my mom do to her?
Mom stood stiff near the door, arms crossed, eyes cold as iron. Unmoved. Unbothered. Kaiden, on the other hand, kept his distance. His jaw was tight, fists curled at his sides.
After a few minutes, the door creaked open and Dr. Pilboi stepped out. His hands were stained with drying blood, and his eyes darted nervously toward
Mom.
“I’ve treated her wounds,” he said. Then, turning to her with a tremble in his voice, he added, “You went too overboard with her.”
Mom’s nostrils flared. “She should be grateful I didn’t kill her,” she snapped, her voice echoing off the walls like a slap. Dr. Pilboi flinched, his shoulders jerking up in fear. “She’s the reason Dan’s in that condition!” Mom shouted. Her voice cracked on the last word–not from weakness, but from fury. Her eyes blazed with unfiltered rage. “You know what? I will kill her right now!”
She turned, storming toward the room with murder in her stride, but as soon as she opened the door, Kaiden stepped in her path.
“No,” He opposed, voice low but firm, his arm shooting out to block her path.
Mom stopped, but only physically. Her rage didn’t. She turned toward him, glaring, her nostrils flared, breath huffing like a bull ready to charge. Her fists clenched so tight her nails nearly pierced her own palms.
But Kaiden didn’t flinch. He stood his ground, jaw locked, gaze steady.
“Selena, calm down,” he said, though his own voice was anything but calm. “I’m angrier than you,” he continued, every word edged in ice. “And I want to kill her more than anyone. But that’s not the solution. Killing her might affect Dad’s mayoral position.”
I blinked.

Chapter 147
THAT was his reason to stop her?
Not that it was wrong to torture someone? Not that they are commiting a crime? No that she was already half dead?
The chill that went through me wasn’t just from the farmhouse air.
It was from him. AND my mom.
He took a slow breath, composing himself before adding, “Also… beating someone to death isn’t the right way to torture.” The way he said it–so calm, so matter–of–fact–sent a shiver down my spine.
He turned and walked into the room.
Not like someone rushing into chaos.
But like someone who already knew what chaos looked like–and was ready to control it.
Mom’s heels clicked sharply as she followed him in.
I also tried to follow them, but the moment I saw Barbara’s face, I hesitated and my feet froze near the doorframe.
Kaiden then turned to look at me. Dark eyes. Serious. Something unreadable in them. Something dangerous. “You may not like what I’m about to do,” he said, his voice as steady as the floor beneath me wasn’t. “So… I think you should just leave.”
Every part of me screamed that leaving would be the better option.
For my sanity.
For my peace of mind.
For whatever sliver of innocence I still had left.
But I didn’t move.
Instead, I took in a slow, steadying breath, lifted my chin, and said, “No, I will stay.”
Kaiden studied me, his head tilting ever so slightly to the side. A muscle in his jaw twitched. “As you wish,” he replied coolly.
Then, without another word, he glanced at the housekeeper standing stiffly in the corner. The man flinched the moment their eyes met–as if Kaiden’s look alone carried weight.
Almost fearfully yet obediently, as if he had face the same situation before as well, he stepped forward toward the small wooden cupboard tucked away in the far corner of the room.
That cupboard was the only other piece of furniture in the room besides the chair. But when the housekeeper opened it, the sight inside froze the breath in my lungs. It was as if the cupboard had been swapped with that of a psycho killer who loves to torture their victims before going in for the kill.
“Which one should I use?” Kaiden asked me,
torture.

“What-“I started, utterly shocked.
“Ooouuu,” Mom cut in with a smirk, her voice dripping with cruel amusement. “Try the nail plucker. When the nail detaches from the skin, it hurts like shit.”
Kaiden’s eyes glinted with something cold as he reached into the cupboard, lifted the nail plucker, and snapped it shut with a satisfying click.
“Water,” he said, nodding toward the housekeeper, who immediately scrambled off to fetch it.

Chapter 147
Within seconds, the man returned, clutching a heavy jug filled to the brim.
“Thanks,” Kaiden said, taking the jug without hesitation.
Without a moment’s pause, he splashed the water onto Barbara’s pale, bruised face. Her eyelids fluttered violently, but she didn’t open her eyes.
Kaiden crouched down beside her as he put the jug on the floor. “Hi, Barbara,” he said softly, his voice cold but deliberate. “Remember me?” He waited
didn’t you?” till she opened her eyes before he continued. “Obviously, you will remember me. After all, just this morning, you wrote about me,
Bárbara’s chest rose and fell, slow and shallow. “What…” Her voice was barely audible, too exhausted, but Kaiden didn’t let her finish.
Without hesitation, he grabbed her nail with the plucker–and yanked it out, mercilessly.
Barbara screamed in agony. Her cry echoed through the room, raw and piercing, while blood oozed from her torn finger. The sound of her pain was so visceral, so gut–wrenching, it made my heart clench violently.
Suddenly, the air felt too thin–like there wasn’t enough oxygen in the room. I couldn’t breathe.
I had seen Kaiden angry before. I had seen him furious. I had even seen him deadly.
But this?
This was different.
This was the most cruel version of him I had ever witnessed.
It was like he had turned off his humanity as if he is one of the vampires in the “The Vampire Diaries” universe.
“What the hell are you doing, Kaiden?” I yelled, my voice trembling with shock. “Please, stop it!”
“Sshhhh… Introvert,” he looked at me with a calm menace. “I already gave her a chance–for your sake.” His voice was calm, chillingly so. “And that was the biggest mistake of my life. So don’t you ever think I’ll stop just because you said so.” Then, he looked back at Barbara with disgust etched into every feature. “People like her don’t deserve talks or warnings,” he spat. “They deserve consequences.”
He clenched his jaw and grabbed another finger.
SNAP!
Another nail was ripped out.
Barbara’s body lurched in pain, her scream so raw, so full of torment, it felt like it tore through the walls and echoed straight into my soul.
Then another nail.
And another.
Each time, her cries grew weaker, hoarser, more haunting–until they were not only just painful to hear but also traumatizing. Like the sound itself could scar your mind.
“I swear–I didn’t post any article!” Barbara cried through her sobs. “Please! Trust me. Please…”
She kept begging, voice cracking.
But Kaiden didn’t stop.
His face was devoid of empathy.
This wasn’t anger.
Chapter 147
It was something far darker.
That version of him didn’t just terrify me–it made me wonder if I would ever be able to look at him the same again.
And then–something snapped in my mind.
A doubt.
A feeling.
What if she was telling the truth?
What if… she really didn’t write that article?
Now that we know that Queen Bee is her, why would she dare to mess with us, especially with Dan?
I didn’t know if it was logic or just my heart trying to protect the girl who had once been my best friend–but I still bet on her words.
I pulled out my phone from my pocket and re–read the article over and over again, clinging to each word, each sentence–analyzing the tone, the phrasing, the choice of insults and outrage.
And then–boom.
There it was.
A point. A clue. Something I couldn’t ignore anymore.
“Barbara’s telling the truth,” I said.
Kaiden froze.
His hand, still gripping Barbara’s wrist, loosened.
He turned slowly, letting go of her hand as he stood up. His eyes locked onto mine like a sniper lining up a shot. “What did you just say?”
To be continued…
