“You… You ungrateful woman!”
Sam was trembling with rage. He pointed at me, but couldn’t even get the words out.
“Fine! You want a divorce? I’ll give it to you! But remember this, without me, you’re nothing! I can’t wait to see how well you survive out there on your own!”
Leo’s expression darkened as well. He stood to the side, holding the baby tightly in his arms.
“Lily, is this really what you want?” he asked, his voice low and threatening.
Lily raised her head, her eyes filled with determination. “Yes. I don’t know exactly what life will be like after we leave you, but one thing’s for sure, it’ll be better than this!”
“Alright then. If you’re going to be this heartless, don’t blame us for being the same!”
Leo let out a cold snort, and there was a flash of menace in his eyes.
“You think leaving us means you’ll go off and live happily ever after? Well, let me tell you something. You’re nothing without us!
“Go ahead. Struggle out there on your own. Sooner or later, you’ll come crawling back!”
Both Sam and Leo clearly thought we were just being impulsive, that we were throwing a tantrum.
They believed we’d suffer without them. And once we’d learned our lesson, we’d come running back, begging for forgiveness.
But what they didn’t realize was that we had already made up our minds. We were done living in the pain of this marriage.
An hour later, Lily and I held our divorce certificates in our hands. The weight on our chests finally lifted.
“It’s finally over,” Lily said, giving me a bittersweet smile.
“Yeah. It’s over,” I replied.
I squeezed her hand, my gaze steady and resolute. “From now on, we live for ourselves.”
We turned and walked away without looking back.
Sam and Leo stood frozen in place, as if they couldn’t believe this was really happening.
