Chapter 3
“Don’t bother–I don’t need you to marry me!”
For six years, he’d always been free.
When he wanted to drink, I quietly accompanied him, never rushing.
If my presence wasn’t wanted, I waited for his call to pick him up.
When he got drunk, I took care of him without complaint.
When he wanted to travel with friends, I booked the tickets and planned their itinerary.
Even when he offered to let me check his phone, I never did.
I loved him, and I didn’t want to make the same mistake my mother did–her controlling nature drove my father to divorce.
I always believed I maintained the perfect balance in our relationship.
At least before his incident, we were inseparable, like any couple deeply in love.
Now I realized that my love had suffocated him.
Was this why he faked his illness? To seek excitement?
Our eyes met, and I saw no trace of affection in his.
The words I wanted to say died in my throat.
Ethan frowned at my stare, grabbed the lilies from his friend, and shoved them into my arms.
‘Enough. Don’t act like you’re above it all. Take the flowers and go!”
He thought I was still the girl who would be satisfied with small gifts.
He didn’t believe that I–the one who swore I’d never marry anyone but him–would really refuse
him now.

I handed the flowers back to his friend.
“These are for your girlfriend. It wouldn’t be right for me to take them.”
“I donated blood voluntarily. You don’t need to force yourself to marry me.”
A strange panic rose in Ethan.
Shouldn’t Olivia be excited?
Why was she repeatedly insisting that he didn’t need to marry her?
Had she really gotten angry?
Anxiety flickered in his eyes.
“Olivia, I…”
His friends cleared their throats pointedly, and he quickly changed course.
“Olivia, I’m a man of my word.”
But I just smiled.
“Go be with your girlfriend.”
“I’m checking out now!”
Hearing my response, Ethan’s heart skipped a beat.
Something about me felt different today, but he couldn’t figure out what had changed.
His friends, sensing his hesitation, pulled him away.
“Come on, stop staring, or Riley will get jealous! First, she plays the tragic victim, now she’s playing hard–to–get. Women’s tricks are all the same–only someone as naive as you would fall for them!”
“Exactly! Look at what you’ve done–you’re not a teenager anymore. How did you cause such severe bleeding? Thankfully, Riley’s understanding, unlike some people who think marriage is a reward for donating blood…”
Hearing these words, meant for me to hear, I felt no expected heartache–just a profound coldness in

my bones.
Even the perfect sunshine couldn’t warm me.
Watching them leave, I completed my discharge.
While Ethan was away, I hired a cleaning lady to help pack up my things.
She hesitated when she saw the beautifully decorated wedding suite.
“Miss, these are all brand new wedding items. Are you sure you want to discard them?”
“Yes. My fiancé died. We won’t need them.”
The lady immediately apologized, trying to comfort me.
Fearing the memories would hurt me, she started removing our wedding photos and dozens of albums.
By the time she was done, my carefully decorated home had lost all traces of joy.
A cold house for a cold heart.
The cleaner looked at the ten bags of mementos by the door–each one a testament to our love–and sighed, shaking her head.
“Miss, try to look forward.”
I nodded with a small smile.
After she left, making sure no trace of me remained in the wedding suite, I deleted my fingerprints from the security system and walked out with my suitcase.
