Chapter 293
Urban shrugged and said, “It’s simply from dealing with Hamlin for so long. If you’d ever done business with him, you’d have noticed the
same.”
As he spoke, Urban reached out and gave Maxine a reassuring pat on the shoulder. “Don’t worry,” he said, “I’ll always have your back.”
Maxine knew he had misunderstood, but she didn’t explain anything. She simply said, “Sorry.”
Urban smiled and said, “We’re always on the same side. If I ever find out anything, you’ll be the first to
know.” Then he glanced at the contract on the table. “So, Ms. Hudson, when will you be starting? Your workstation is all set up and ready for you.”
Maxine arched an eyebrow. “You’re that certain I’ll stay?”
Urban said playfully, “You will. You’ve always been kind to me. And really, who could leave someone as pitiful as me?”
Truth be told, he knew Maxine all too well. To her, he honestly looked just like one of those helpless old men everyone bullied.
Maxine gazed at Urban’s strikingly handsome yet tender face, hesitated, but in the end swallowed the words she’d been about to say.
As Maxine turned to pick up the contract from the table, Urban unexpectedly reached out and gently cupped her cheek, guiding her to face him. Suddenly, they were so close that she could clearly see her
own reflection in his eyes.
“You…” Maxine was about to speak, but Urb

Maxine hadn’t been this close to anyone in ages. Instinctively, she clenched her fists, on the verge of punching Urban’s handsome face.
Urban suddenly remarked, “It seems I saw a hint of pity for me in your eyes.”
Maxine instinctively averted her gaze, refusing to meet his eyes.
Urban paused to gather his thoughts. “Like one of those lonely old folks left all alone, abandoned by everyone in their twilight years.”
“Alright!” Maxine said, a little flustered. “Don’t overthink it! I need to review the contract. You carry on with your work.”

With that said, she snatched up the contract from the table and hurried out of the office.

As soon as Maxine opened the door, she nearly bumped into Dawn, who was just about to come in. Dawn looked like she wanted to say something, but Maxine quickly cut her off. “Mr. Soto’s inside. I’ve got things to do, so I’m heading out. If you need anything, just text me or come find me in my office.
later.”
Dawn blinked in confusion as she watched Maxine make a hasty retreat.
Maxine dropped her things on the desk. The more she thought about it, the angrier she got, Urban had clearly been messing with her. She slapped the table and decided, “Screw it, I’m playing hooky today!”
Maxine grabbed her bag and headed out, calling Lisa to ask where she and the others were.
She thought, ‘Well, since I’m starting at Alpite Group anyway, might as well enjoy my last free day and really relax.‘
Not long after Maxine left, Dawn rushed into the office, arms full of files. “Maxine…”
Looking up, Dawn saw that Maxine was nowhere to be found in the office. A female colleague nearby chimed in, “She just took a call, grabbed her bag, and left. I doubt she’s coming back today.”
Dawn sighed. “Alright, we’ll talk about it tomorrow.”
The other colleagues gathered around Dawn, eager for gossip. “Dawn, who was that woman just now? She looked so familiar, what’s her story?”
As they were chatting, another assistant walked in, eager to join the gossip. “Hey, guess what about that woman just now?”
