Chapter 40
I watched as Jack pulled out his phone and stepped aside to make a call. I hid in the safety corridor, making sure Noah wouldn’t spot me here. When Jack finished his call and approached me, he looked down at me from above. His expression was calm, but his tone was particularly cocky:”Let’s go.”
“Where to?”
“To watch a show.”
I followed him into the elevator, heading straight to the third floor. The decor up here was completely different from downstairs. I stole a glance at the man beside me, having heard that the third floor of this restaurant required a certain membership level to access. No one in New York likely had that level of membership. Jack had entered easily, and the staff were deferential.
I whispered, “I heard only high-level members can access the third floor.”
“Yes, I know.”
I looked at his profile; was he deliberately avoiding my question? Of course, I knew that too. But what I wanted to ask was how he could just waltz up to the third floor!
As I was lost in thought, Jack suddenly stopped, and I bumped into his back. He turned his head, a teasing glint in his eyes:”Watch the show first, I’ll explain later.”
But then he turned and walked away. I called out, “Where are you going?”
“Restroom.”
I glanced at the restroom not far away; that guy just took the elevator down. Where was he headed? I then realized we were standing in a corridor that had a clear view of the private room on the second floor. Something felt off, but I saw Jack stepping out of the elevator.
The private room door opened, and Noah, along with Chloe, walked out, accompanied by a staff member who was saying something. Noah looked unhappy, and they headed for the elevator. Jack stood there as if he had been waiting for them to come out.
When Noah saw this man, he instinctively frowned:”What are you doing here? Did Alice find you?”
The restaurant had been cleared; which meant a big shot was coming. The Welch family were influential, but this restaurant’s origins were in Washington, and they held significant power.
Chloe which meant a big shot was coming. “Impossible! Isn’t this restaurant members-only? How did a school
doctor get
in? It must be that Alice brought him in!” A handsome doctor was still just a doctor.
Jack’s tone was impatient. “Take her out.”
Suddenly, two staff members appeared, heading straight for Chloe, who quickly hid behind Noah. “Noah, I’m
scared.”
Noah stepped forward.”What do you mean?”
“Literally. She’s too noisy. I want to talk to you,” Jack said coldly, his tone brooking no argument.

Noah noticed the restaurant was empty. Was it because of this doctor? Last time, when I was taken away by this school doctor, he used the Welch family’s connections but couldn’t find me. He had secretly investigated this school doctor but found nothing about him. This Jack was a mystery; he didn’t know if he was intentionally getting close to me. It seemed unlikely. After all, I was just a young girl who had never left New York and wouldn’t have offended anyone.
Noah wanted to know their relationship, so he told Chloe,”Go wait for me outside.”
“Noah.”
“Be obedient!”
Despite her reluctance, Chloe had to leave.
Noah reassessed the school doctor in front of him; his aura was extraordinary, definitely not of ordinary origin.
Noah asked, “Where’s Alice?”
“I’m not obligated to tell you. She’s under my protection. I don’t want you hurting her before her exams.”
“Hurting Alice? She’s my sister! And you, an unknown school doctor, what do you want from her?”
Jack was cold and sharp.”That’s none of your business.”
“She’s my sister; why shouldn’t I care?” Noah recalled this man had called the police, forcing Luke to move out and stay away from me.
Jack had one hand in his pocket, his expression haughty:”Take care of your fake sister and keep your false kindness to yourself.”
After he spoke, the elevator doors opened, and a middle-aged man stepped out. Noah said hastily, “Manager, this man is suspicious.” He wanted to learn Jack’s identity.
The manager was deferential to Jack. He addressed Noah,”Mr. Welch, the restaurant is closed. Please leave.”
Noah looked at Jack.”What about him?”
“Mr. Welch, this
way.” The
manager
didn’t answer.

Noah was escorted to the elevator, seeing Jack’s tall, arrogant figure. His silhouette was tall, his arrogant. The restaurant manager stood nearby, slightly bowing his head, clearly indicating that this school doctor, Jack, was not of ordinary background. Noah suddenly thought of me. When did I get to know these people? He recalled my departing figure and my changes lately; could it be that this man gave me the courage to stand up against the family?
Noah felt a headache coming on. He needed to investigate Jack’s background to avoid trouble with his older brother later, who wouldn’t be so forgiving. He had to resolve this quickly. Noah took out his phone, but I didn’t answer or reply to his messages. I watched my second brother leave and looked up to see Jack stepping out of the elevator, his steps slow and powerful, his gaze calm:”They’re gone.”
I was surprised.”How did you do that?” He’d said “they” would leave. I was a bit surprised:”How did you do
that?”
For a moment, I thought Jack was just bragging; after all, this was New York.

He stood before me.”I called a friend.”
“Your friend is influential. He has third-floor membership and can make the restaurant evict people.”
Jack said calmly, “He’s alright.”
My mood improved; I was curious. “Who is he?” Few families in New York had that kind of power.
Jack was reluctant to say, “From Washington.”
“No wonder. He must be a wealthy heir.” Washington was a hub of power and wealth; my older brother had spent most of his time there.
I looked at him curiously. “How do you know such a wealthy person? Were you classmates?”
Was he really just a school doctor?
