I chuckled as I casually stuffed the love letter into my desk without even glancing at it. I didn’t even mention anything about contact information.
Chloe was seething.”Alice, why didn’t you open them and take a look??”
“I’ve gotten them before,” I replied. The last time I got love letters was back in elementary school, before my parents had their issues and before Chloe entered my life.
Chloe felt a pang of resentment.”What’s she so proud of?” Her expression darkened.
How could I, who she had manipulated into a timid little quail, suddenly change so much?
Was I trying to steal Garrett?
After school, I packed my bag and left without a second thought. Chloe lingered for a while, then went over to grab all the love letters from my desk.
I went to the infirmary, wanting to surprise Jack, but he wasn’t there.
I pulled out my phone and texted him:”My grades are out, I made the top ten! I might have a shot at Harvard University!” I wanted to share my happiness with him.
After sending the message, I felt great anticipation for Jack’s reply.
Noah appeared.”Alice, I heard you did well this time. Congratulations.”
Seeing Noah standing in front of me, my smile faded a bit.”Okay.”
He handed me a gift box.”To celebrate your great results, I picked this out for you. Didn’t you say you liked this brand of jewelry?”
I glanced at the gemstone necklace inside the box. Was this supposed to make up for the emerald necklace he had given away? Just then, Chloe walked over and caught sight of the necklace, her expression almost cracking.
“What a beautiful necklace! Alice, wear it for Noah.”
I lifted my eyelids slightly.”I don’t like it.”
Noah’s expression was awkward. “If you don’t like it, I’ll exchange it for something else. What do you prefer?”
After I refused the emerald necklace, Noah went out and bought a new one. Surely this would be acceptable, right?
I could see he was trying to make amends, but the hurt I felt couldn’t just be erased with a piece of jewelry.

Chloe saw the shift in Noah’s attitude; was he trying to reconcile with me? This wasn’t what she expected.
Chloe said smoothly, “Alice, Noah is a straight guy; how would he know what kind of jewelry girls like? You have no idea how envious I am of you!”

Chloe’s eyes welled up.”I didn’t do well this time! If it weren’t for Lucy’s situation affecting me, I wouldn’t have done so poorly.”
Noah said awkwardly, “I know. It’s not your fault. Let’s get in the car; I’ll take you both out for a celebratory meal.” He wanted to change the subject.
Chloe’s expression faltered. What was there to celebrate when she had done poorly? It was all about my
success.
She said resentfully,”Alice, how did you improve so much? Do you have some secret or shortcut?”
I said flatly, “Focus on studying, not gaming.”
Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.”But Alice, you’ve received so many love letters.”
Noah immediately asked, “What’s going on?”
Chloe explained,”Alice is super popular at school now! Even students from other schools are trying to get her contact info!”
Noah frowned, recalling Jack, and warned, “Alice, focus on your studies. Don’t be distracted.”
I leaned back, responding lazily. I wasn’t interested in any of that.
Chloe noticed Noah wasn’t getting angry and felt a sense of unease. Noah looked at her.”Chloe, try your best next time. There’s still a chance for the college entrance exam; nothing should affect your performance.”
Chloe was frustrated. Her poor score was because of the competition; but the Welch family didn’t think to compensate her at all! The emerald necklace she had received was even being taken back! How infuriating!
Noah’s attitude towards me was clearly changing; she had to find a way to stop it!
The car arrived at a fancy restaurant. I got out feeling down. Looking at Chloe and Noah, I thought I’d rather be home studying!
Chloe exclaimed in surprise, “Wow, this restaurant! Noah, you’re so biased! I asked you to take me here before, and didn’t agree.”

Noah replied, “I was busy before; today I’m taking you both out.”

Chloe secretly took out her phone to snap a few pictures, ready to show off on social media.
Noah looked at me; I wasn’t as excited as Chloe.

As I waited for the elevator, I suddenly caught a glimpse of a figure on the second floor.
My gaze paused: was that Jack?
I thought I might be mistaken, but that profile really looked like his!
He was with a beautiful woman, long black hair and legs for days.

I had just texted him but hadn’t received a reply. Was he on a date?

I snapped back to reality, seeing Noah holding the phone, the video call already connected.
I saw Ethan on the other side, his features serious, exuding an intimidating presence. I quietly approached. “Brother.”
I only greeted him and fell silent.
The atmosphere turned cold.

He had heard that I had changed a lot and was distancing myself from the family out of spite.
I looked at him slowly.”I refuse.”
