Evelyn’s attention snapped sharply to Melvin at that comment.

“You’ve had more than ten girlfriends before?” she demanded, her voice cutting through the tension.
“No, no. She’s lying!” Melvin stammered, scrambling to defend himself.
I chuckled coldly, stepping in again. “You’re the only one he’s had. However, he has a type, and he goes for the same one every single time–so it’s basically like dating the same girl over and over.”
“Shut up!” Melvin barked at me, his tone harsh, but then he quickly softened, trying to calm Evelyn down.
My words had already landed. Evelyn’s face twisted with rage as she glared daggers at Melvin. “I can’t believe you, you jerk! No wonder you fooled me so fast.”
“That’s not true. Why would you believe her instead of me?” Melvin said, frustrated, pulling Evelyn close in a soothing attempt.
“Don’t touch me! I see right through you. The way you talk, it’s clear you’re a master at fooling girls. I can’t believe I’m stupid enough to fall for it!” Evelyn snapped, pushing him away hard.
Melvin’s anger flared up. “You’re crazy. Stop this madness! You’re the one who told me to bring Rosaline here, and now you’re mad at me just because you listened to her crap? You can’t believe me? I can’t believe you!”
“What did you call me?” Evelyn fired back, fury blazing in her eyes. “Did you just call me crazy?”
I hung back, watching it all unfold with a cold smirk.
My plan was to stir up chaos, to buy myself some time.
I kept adding fuel to the fire, and their argument heated up until it almost turned physical.
Just as Evelyn’s nails scratched Melvin’s face, the door to the dark room slammed open with a kick.
Sunlight spilled inside, and a pack of black wolves barreled in, knocking both Evelyn and Melvin to the ground.
I closed my eyes for a moment; the sudden brightness felt harsh after so much darkness.
Evelyn and Melvin froze, staring wide–eyed at the figure standing in the doorway.
“C–Caden!”
Caden was finally here.
I summoned every bit of strength and ran toward him, my heart pounding with relief.
Caden opened his arms wide and pulled me close, holding me tight. I wrapped my arms around him just as firmly, breathing in the familiar scent that settled over me like a shield of safety. It was the kind of comfort that washed away every shred of fear.
He gently traced his fingers over my cheek before his gaze shifted coldly to Evelyn and Melvin, who lay sprawled on the floor.

His intense presence made them both shiver uncontrollably.
Outside, the sharp wail of police sirens cut through the air, and werewolf officers burst through the door.
With a subtle gesture from Caden, his black wolf enforcers lunged forward, grabbing Evelyn and Melvin by their collars and dragging them to stand before the officers.
“Officer, officer, I swear I’m innocent! This is all his fault. I had nothing to do with it!” Evelyn clung desperately to the pant leg of a werewolf cop, her finger jabbing accusingly at Melvin as she shouted.
“You crazy bitch! You told me to bring Rosaline here!” Melvin fired back, stunned that Evelyn had just betrayed him.
The couple, who had just been arguing out of jealousy, now turned on each other without hesitation when real trouble hit.
The irony wasn’t lost on me.
“Let go!” one of the werewolf officers barked sharply, yanking Evelyn’s hands off his leg. He then nodded to Caden in appreciation. “Thanks for the help, Mr. Holbrook. I’ll take this guy in for now. The woman isn’t directly involved in this matter, so charging her will be difficult.”
“What? Hey, why is she getting away with this?” Melvin shouted, enraged. “She’s the mastermind. I was just forced into it!”
“Shut up!” the officer snapped again. “Both of you will be coming down to the station for questioning.”
I wasn’t happy about it, but with the officer’s firm tone, arguing wasn’t an option.
“Alright,” Caden agreed, watching as the officers hauled them away.
“It’s over now,” Caden whispered, wrapping his arm around my waist to steady me and reassuring me not to worry.
Then, as the officers led Melvin out, a sharp scream shattered the tense silence.
“Melvin–Melvin ran!” Evelyn yelled.
My heart leapt. I bolted outside with Caden to see what was happening.
Melvin had slipped away in the chaos–shifting into his wolf form, he darted straight into the dense forest nearby. The area was remote, thick with trees and underbrush, and the werewolf officers lost sight of which direction he’d gone.
“Our search teams are on him. Don’t worry. We’ll find him soon,” one officer said, trying to reassu
I nodded, but frustration gnawed at me. After being restrained for so long, drained and worn, I had nothing left and sank weakly against Caden’s chest.
He held me close, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead. “It’s okay. It’s alright now.”

I nodded slowly, inhaling his familiar scent and letting a rare calm wash over me. “Thank you, Cden.”
“You silly girl,” Caden smiled softly, warmth glowing in his eyes. “You’re my wife. Keeping you safe is my responsibility.”
I clung to him, feeling like I could finally breathe again.
