Hearing Sam’s words felt like a knife slicing straight through my heart.
“The baby… The baby is gone,” I choked, the tears flooding my eyes once again.
Sam froze for a second, then his expression twisted into fury.
“Gone? What do you mean, gone? Did you do this on purpose? Did you kill it out of spite?”
He took a step forward and grabbed my arm so hard it felt like he was going to crush my bones.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done? That was my child! How could you be so heartless? I swear, this is murder. I’m taking you to the police!”
I shook my head, my tears falling silently down my cheeks.
“That’s not what happened, Sam. Please, just listen to me.
“I was on my way to the hospital for a checkup that day when I was abducted by a group of men. They tortured me, beat me until I lost the baby.
“They were enemies you made in the past. They did it to get revenge on you. I was the one who paid the price.
“If Annie hadn’t told them I was your wife, they never would’ve come after me. She pointed them right to me! And where were you when I needed you? You were with Annie and her baby, acting like I didn’t exist!”
I was sobbing so hard I could barely stand.
“What? How could that happen?” Sam was stunned. His grip on my arm loosened, and his face filled with shock
“No, that’s not true! You’re lying!”
Beside us, Leo was also frozen in disbelief. The baby in his arms suddenly burst into tears, and he fumbled awkwardly to soothe the baby.
Meanwhile, Annie had slipped behind him, putting on her most pitiful expression.
“It wasn’t me. I would never do something like that. Leo, you have to believe me…”
