Chapter 784 Sinister Intentions
“Of course I’ll help. Now wipe those tears and come with me.”
I handed Yvette a few tissues and led her out of her room.
તા.
“Mrs. Rowan,” I said to Margaret with a soft smile and lowered eyes, “I heard what happened earlier. On behalf of Yvette, I want to apologize to you.”
“Oh no, no! Don’t say that. You’re her boss–we should be thanking you.”
“Mom, what are you doing?” Elliot muttered in protest, tugging on Margaret’s sleeve. But she immediately shot him a sharp glare to shut him up.
I cleared my throat and straightened my posture. “Well, since we’re being honest, I’ll speak my mind. These days, if a young person wants to stand on their own two feet, financial security is everything.
Margaret nodded thoughtfully.
“Everyone’s trying to save these days. But as far as I know, Yvette hasn’t saved a single penny since she started working. And that’s because every time she gets paid, her brother asks for money–with all kinds of excuses. And it’s all been wasted.”
Margaret turned to Elliot, who shook his head frantically, trying to deny it.
“If you’re planning to rely on Yvette for support later in life,” I continued, “maybe it’s time to start treating her a little better. Let her focus on work without being constantly drained by her brother’s demands.”
Margaret fell quiet, clearly shaken.
As her boss, everything I’d said hit exactly where it needed to.
After a few moments, she seemed to understand what I was really getting at. She turned and gave Elliot a sharp glare, then nodded at me. “You’re right. I’ll keep an eye on him. Don’t worry.”
Seeing her finally agree, I let out a small breath of relief. “Well then, I won’t take up any more of your time. I’ll visit again sometime.”
Yvette walked me out, gratitude written all over her face. “Rosie, seriously… thank you. You always help me through the worst.”
I waved it off casually. “It’s no big deal. Helping you means you can focus better at work, which benefits me and the company.”
Yvette nodded quickly, her eyes shining as I patted her cheek and headed off.
After handling Yvette’s issue, I made my way downtown to the Painting Association.
Now that I was Andrew’s official apprentice, I needed to start showing up regularly–keep up appearances, learn something new, maybe build some connections.
As soon as I walked in, I ran into Evelyn.
The memory of our face–off at the art gathering still lingered, so I instinctively lowered my head, trying to

avoid her and walk past.
“Hey, Rosaline!” Evelyn called out brightly, waving at me like we were best friends,
I had no choice but to acknowledge her. After all, Andrew had reminded me to stay cordial,
“I’m hosting an exhibition tomorrow,” she said cheerfully. “A lot of big names are coming. Do you want to stop by?”
I blinked. An invitation? In front ofeveryone? Buttomorrow…
I frowned slightly. I’d just dealt with Yvette’s situation, and I might need to reorganize her schedule and work responsibilities.
“Maybe not. I have something going on tomorrow,” I replied.
Evelyn clearly hadn’t expected a refusal. Her face stiffened. I quickly added, “If I get a chance, I’ll definitely swing by.”
That seemed to appease her, and she nodded, though not without hesitation. I thought that would be the end of it. But the next morning, right after I’d finished washing up, my phone rang.
It was Evelyn.
I frowned. I had just turned her down yesterday, and now she was calling first thing in the morning?
I considered hanging up but figured she might use it against me if I ignored her–so I answered.
“Are you awake yet? I’m at the dessert shop downstairs from your place. They’ve got a new seasonal menu. Do you want to come try it with me?”
Her voice was bright, upbeat–almost too enthusiastic. I had zero interest in joining her.
“I just woke up.”
“No problem! A little sugar will put you in a better mood.”
Her eagerness made me pause. For a second, I almost believed this was just how she was–friendly, enthusiastic, maybe a little clingy.
I sighed and threw on a T–shirt, then headed downstairs to meet her.
“I’m over here!”
The second I entered the shop, I heard her call out. She was seated near the window, dressed to the nines- hair curled, makeup perfect, earrings gleaming. She had obviously put effort into her look.
I sighed inwardly and walked over.
“You just woke up, right? I ordered/one of their new desserts–hope you like it. Try it!” Evelyn said sweetly, sliding the plate toward me.
I nodded and took it, but noticed something odd–she kept typing furiously on her phone, barely looking at
- me.
“What are you up to? You seem busy.”

But I’d caught a glimpse of her phone through the reflection in the mirror behind her. She was posting something on Twitter–lines and lines of text.
And her account had no profile picture. It was a newly created account.
My heart skipped.
Recently, I’d been dealing with a wave of online hate–Twitter accounts with no pictures, random gibberish usernames, all posting negative things about me.
And now, here was Evelyn–on what looked like exactly that kind of account.
I glanced at her, still smiling sweetly across the table, and felt an unexpected chill rise through my spine.
We weren’t enemies. At least, I didn’t think we were. So why would she be doing something so underhanded?
